For many years Georgia, which included the republic, tried to assimilate South Ossetians by force, to destroy their traditions and the memory of their roots. In 1991-1992, this conflict turned into a war, and as a result, South Ossetia declared independence. However, most of the countries of the world have not yet recognized it. Life in little-recognised South Ossetia is slowly returning to normal. Though there’s still a lot to be done to restore what had been destroyed during the war, residents of South Ossetia look optimistically into the future.
