Salar de Uyuni in southwest Bolivia is the world’s largest salt flat, or ‘God’s Mirror’, as the locals call it. This beautiful and otherworldly landscape isn’t just a tourist destination, but also an extraction site for salt. It is traditionally worked by the community of «saleros» who for generations have harvested salt here. Their work is arduous and can be a serious health hazard. Just a few decades ago salt was in great demand, but not anymore. Digging for lithium hidden underneath the layer of salt is a much more profitable business these days. So, quite likely, the trade of saleros is in its last generation. What new path will they take?
