In 2020, a giant blast tore through the Lebanese capital of Beirut. Eyewitnesses described it as if the end of the world had come. Some 2,700 tonnes of highly explosive ammonium nitrate exploded in the city port, creating shock waves for kilometres in all directions. The explosion levelled much of the city. More than 200 people were killed, thousands more were injured and scores lost their homes. The blast exacerbated the economic crisis in the country, where more than half the population now lives below the poverty line.
