They call themselves freegans. They collect food and various things on the streets and garbage dumps, and share them with other people. They do it not because they are poor. Freegans oppose the principles of consumerism and believe that in this way they help save the planet. Nearly 1/5 of all U.S. farmland and trillions of gallons of water are used to grow food that no one eats because it's not profitable, they say. In addition to food, these men and women pick up discarded medicines, books, dishes, furniture, and other household items. Not all Americans share this philosophy, but freegans do not see anything shameful in it.
