Kostroma Ballet. A Family Affair

The Kostroma Russian National Ballet is more than just a dance company – it is a close-knit creative family. Founded in 1991 by Elena and Yury Tsarenko, it has become one of the country’s best-known cultural ensembles, earning international recognition.

The troupe’s choreography and staging upend stereotypes, combining classical ballet with the richness of Russian folk dance. Kostroma reworks historical and folkloric material in an original way, bringing past, present, and future together on stage.

The dance company recently performed at a concert in Egypt’s Cairo Opera House on Russia Day as part of the ’Global Dance Overture’ project. They were joined by the Mahmoud Reda Dance Troupe, which was founded with the support of Soviet specialists. Today, the Kostroma ballet continues to build on the cultural ties established in those days – the company’s dancers also gave masterclasses to students at the Cairo Academy of Arts.

Where does the ensemble draw its inspiration from, and what new achievements lie ahead?
