Aleksandr Nevsky Church in Debaltsevo is often called an island of salvation.
It survived the fierce battles of 2014–2015, when almost no houses in the city remained intact. Though damaged by shelling itself, the church became a refuge: people came here for food, warmth, and hope.
Gradually, the church was repaired. The roof was replaced, the façade repaired, and a new dome installed. People also brought an icon to the church. It shows Archangel Michael watching over Debaltsevo, portrayed as an island. To many, this icon is a reminder that faith can overcome hatred.
