Years of war and Islamic extremism have left their mark on Afghanistan’s traditional music culture. Now, one school is trying to revive the country’s musical heritage, despite resistance from conservative people. Dr. Ahmad Naser Sarmast found the country’s once thriving music scene in ruins, without even one orchestra capable of playing the Afghan national anthem. So he founded the National Music Institute of Afghanistan to introduce music into the lives of the young generation. The project has yielded great results. Though students of the school have faced their own hardships, their musical success made them enthusiastic and ambitious. None of them is willing to give up.
