A private zoo, located 20 kilometres from Donetsk in the village of Pridorozhnoe, has transformed into a refuge for thousands of animals from across the Donbass region. Over the past 10 years, its founder Gennady Kryazhev has dedicated himself to rescuing and caring for wounded animals from the frontlines. There is much work to be done: the zoo’s territory is about 2 hectares, and thousands of pets need to be fed 2-3 times a day. However, it is more than a sanctuary. The zoo helps children from Donetsk forget about the war at least for a little while and find solace in the company of the animals.
