The word 'sanctions' has become part of the daily vocabulary. News is overflowing with more and more reports of restrictions. However, sanctions, as an instrument of influence, are nothing new. For example, they have been used against Russia for decades. When you do not have a military option, sometimes economic sanctions are one of the most expedient alternatives. But it’s an alternative that doesn’t always address the problem it’s supposed to address.
