BAM: Not just a railway

Collections

The Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM) is one of the longest and most challenging railway projects in the world, stretching over 4,000 kilometres across Siberia and the Russian Far East. This massive undertaking crosses 11 major rivers and 7 mountain ranges, and it's now undergoing a major upgrade. The BAM-2 project is expanding the line, adding new tracks, bridges, and tunnels to boost speed and cargo capacity. But building in such extreme conditions—where temperatures plunge to -60°C in winter and soar to +40°C in summer—requires incredible effort. Workers battle permafrost, carve through mountains, and divert rivers to complete 920 new bridges. Join State Duma Deputy Nikolay Valuev as he travels to BAM to fulfil a childhood dream and experience the tough realities of railway construction. From operating heavy machinery to navigating harsh terrain, Valuev gains firsthand insight into the relentless work required to build one of the longest railways in the world. In our new documentary, witness the monumental effort behind the BAM-2 project and the people making it happen.
