«I didn’t meet a single person in Donbass who considered Russia an aggressor or an occupier,» says Pavol Slota. The leader of the Slovak political party DOMOV—Narodna Strana—and journalist Mikhala Hanovska visited the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) to see Donetsk, Avdeevka, and Mariupol firsthand. They spoke with local residents and people who had fought in the battles for Donbass. They learned about the events of the past 10 years, including how the Ukrainian army has shelled residential areas and churches—information that is never reported by Western media.
Slota was struck by how quickly the destroyed cities are being rebuilt. He believes that the conflict in Donbass started in 2014, instigated by Western countries. According to him, Slovaks share responsibility for the deaths of Donetsk civilians, and «the only path to peace is a change of regime in Kiev.» He returned to the European Union with the truth he saw, hoping to encourage critical thinking among Europeans.
