Battle for the Beret

Battle for the Beret

Collections

The maroon beret is the highest mark of distinction for elite Russian Special Forces units, a symbol of valour and courage. It is earned through blood, sweat and toil. Only those who have served in Special Forces for at least a year and have already demonstrated outstanding performance across a range of disciplines are permitted to take on the gruelling trials.

The main examination includes a 10–12 kilometre loaded march carrying kit weighing up to 15 kilograms, elements of assault training and live-fire drills with various weapons. The final tasks include physical exercises, acrobatics, and four rounds of hand-to-hand combat against experienced instructors and fellow fighters.

The main goal of the exams is to test whether a candidate can maintain composure under extreme duress. Only the most resilient make it to the end. The examination is held twice a year, in spring and autumn. In the first half of 2026, out of 33 fighters cleared to take part, only two candidates earned their maroon berets. As the soldiers themselves say, failing the first time only strengthens the drive for that coveted prize. After all, the maroon beret is a way of life – it represents discipline, dedication and an unwavering commitment to the calling.
