Seven people are kidnapped for ransom every day in Mexico, according to official data. Journalists and human rights activists say there are many more kidnappings. Bus drivers, students, rich businessmen – anyone could become a victim. Ransoms start at $500, and some kidnappers can demand tens of thousands of dollars for years. This was the case with an abducted young girl. For two years, her father had been paying ransom and hoping to bring her back. Eventually the father found the criminals and his murdered daughter himself. Why do these crimes persist?
