In 2021, Russia supplied Europe with more than 40% of its gas, thus sanctions the EU imposed on Russia triggered an energy crisis and price surge. All over Europe, businesses like cafes and bakeries have no other option than to shut down as the energy cost hits new records. European governments are trying to find alternatives and quickly replace Russian supplies. As a result, Europeans continue to buy the same gas, but from intermediaries who sell it ten times higher, says Latvian MP Alexei Roslikov.
