Campania is a scenic region in south western Italy. Thanks to its volcano, the land is very prosperous and bountiful. However, in the past three decades, Campania has developed a much less positive reputation. Now it is a highly polluted area with endless burning dumps. This is what some parts of Campania have become known as the «Land of Fire». The problem has been ignored too long despite soaring rates of cancer among the local population. Illegal toxic waste disposal has contaminated the soil, ground waters and air. Stopping the practice presents a huge challenge. However, thanks to extensive media coverage, the government has started paying attention to local demands.
