Both the USA and the EU have accused Hungary of taking a pro-Russian stance persistently. Despite pressure on Budapest to partake in sanctioning Russia by the rest of the EU countries, it still maintained its relations with Moscow. Hungary continues to vote against new sanction packages and steadily buys Russian gas. It blocks transit of weapons to Ukraine through its territory and opposes Ukraine’s attempts to join the EU. Why has the country chosen to maintain its relations with Russia?
