According to the WHO, more than 200,000 tons of medical waste ended up in landfills around the world during the pandemic. While medical waste requires separate and delicate handling to avoid spreading the infection, it is being illegally dumped in rivers, fields, or simply thrown into dumpsters along the roads. The COVID outbreak has led to the overflowing of landfills with toxic waste from hospitals. Businesses have also preferred not to waste extra money on the proper disposal of dangerous waste. Faced with the daily danger of contracting a virus, garbage collectors are left with no other choice than to just pray for their safety.
