As French troops entered Mali in 2013 to assist the country in combating terrorism, many wondered if the mission was in fact an attempt to gain influence over the former colony. France gained access to Mali's natural resources and essentially enslaved its economy. But now, Malians are stating emphatically that they will fight for their independence from the European state, and that they have a partner that will help them attain this. Will they succeed?
