During the Battle for Mariupol in 2022, there was no corridor for the evacuation of civilians. The battle of Mariupol trapped thousands of citizens, who had to scavenge the streets for food and water. To make matters worse, the Ukrainian nationalists placed artillery systems near civilian shelters and set up firing positions in populated areas. The tactic was designed to provoke response actions from the Russian army. But when the tactic failed, the nationalists themselves fired at civilians, in order to pin the casualties on Russia. Today, the people of Mariupol can say that they have survived hell. But at what cost?
