This remarkable story explores the culture and life of the Albanian sworn virgins, the burrnesha. This ancient tradition saw women take a vow of purity whilst giving up their sexual and reproductive identities in order to attain freedom just like men, such as drinking, smoking, working just like men as well as being the head of families. It is believed that this practice still exist, at a lesser degree, in some western Balkan states such as Bosnia, Croatia and Serbia.
