In Zabbaleen, on the outskirts of Cairo, Egypt, tens of thousands of people live amid a sprawling dump, recycling the city’s waste. Their self-sufficient town provides everything they need, from toys to livestock feed. Each resident has a role, ensuring efficient recycling. Zabbaleen boasts its own rules, an unofficial mayor, shops, cafes and even a school. While they dream of better lives, they take pride in their socially important work.
