The St. Nicholas Dormition Monastery in the village of Nikolskoe is called a stronghold in the DPR.
For 3 years, it served as a shelter for hundreds of children, the elderly, and women fleeing Ukrainian attacks. ‘People kept coming to us. They still do,’ says Nun Varvara.
The Ukrainian army shelled the monastery throughout that time. Hardly any buildings remain intact on its grounds. Since the liberation of Nikolskoe, the monastery has begun to return to peaceful life. Restoration work is underway, and aid is coming from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Crimea, and Donetsk.
