Russia has repeatedly come to Lebanon’s aid – helping to rebuild bridges in the south of the country after a war with Israel in 2006 and providing humanitarian assistance in 2024. Now, Lebanon is eager to return the favour by supporting residents affected by conflict in Russia’s regions today.
‘Russia is a country that wants to help everyone. Russia is very much needed in the world!’ say members of the Lebanon-Russia Solidarity Committee, established by Mohamad Ghaboura. Other activists whose lives are closely connected to Russia have joined this initiative. Mohammad’s son, Mostafa, came to study in Russia back in 2012, later married, and decided to stay permanently. Galina Abbas graduated from RUDN, married a Lebanese man, and has lived in Beirut for many years. She coordinates the committee’s activities. Another member, Hamed Abu Zahr, who comes from a poor family, went to the USSR to study in 1985, which changed his life.
The members of the Solidarity Committee organised a trip to Donbass, where they witnessed the consequences of Ukrainian aggression firsthand. They brought food and children’s clothing to local residents. As a lasting symbol of friendship, the activists planted a Lebanese cedar tree in one of Donbass’ cities – a testament to resilience and a sign of the support Lebanon stands ready to offer Russia.
