The Hermitage is one of the planet’s top museums. Its walls bear witness to many events and have seen the world change. Its rich collections of chef-d'oeuvres sparkling right in the heart of St. Petersburg are something to marvel at.
But technology is advancing rapidly and physical museum spaces are in danger of becoming relics of the past. ‘Our job is to preserve this wonderful 19th century museum and make sure it continues to tell stories. It takes a lot of work,’ says The Hermitage’s head curator, Mikhail Piotrovsky. While it is a modern high-tech museum of global significance, he maintains it still manages to preserve the spirit of the past.
