Kabardino-Balkaria in the heart of the Caucasus is known for its ancient glaciers, deep gorges, and mysterious lakes. Peter Scott travels to this southern Russian republic to explore its spectacular landscapes on land, water, and even from the air.
Here, rises the Bezengi Wall – the highest mountain massif in the Caucasus, often referred to as the ‘Russian Himalayas’. At its foot, Peter visits the Bezengi Glacier, the largest in the region. In the Chegem Gorge, he takes to the skies on a paraglider before diving into the Lower Blue Lake – one of the deepest karst lakes in Europe.
How far can a paraglider fly? And why doesn’t the Blue Lake ever freeze, even in winter?
