Olkhon Island is the sacred centre of Lake Baikal. Sean Thomas travels to the world’s deepest lake to learn more about the history and traditions of this mysterious place.

On the island, he visits the local museum, where the director shows him archaeological finds that suggest the island’s ancient people were ancestors of Native Americans. These early inhabitants are thought to have crossed from Asia to America via the Bering Land Bridge, back when the continents were still connected. The director explains that they may have moved because of climate changes, shifting glaciers, or following animals they hunted.

Sean then explores the island’s shamanic traditions. Valentin Khagdaev, a hereditary shaman, shows him the sacred serge poles – places of power, where rituals are held and offerings are made to the spirits. Valentin explains that true shamans never harm others or stir up conflict. Their role is to keep the balance between the world of people and the world of spirits.

Sean finishes his journey in the workshop of sculptor Dashi Namdakov. His art, inspired by the beliefs and traditions of the Baikal peoples, is known around the world. For Dashi, creating art is a way to protect and share the unique culture of Olkhon.
