Oliver Reginald Tambo was born in South Africa. He was a close associate of Nelson Mandela and one of the key figures in the fight against apartheid. Along with Mandela, he co-founded the African National Congress (ANC) Youth League, proposing new methods of struggle, such as boycotts and petitions. Tambo and Mandela also established the first legal firm for Black South Africans, which defended their rights in court.

For his efforts, Tambo was exiled from his homeland for 30 years. During this time, he traveled around the world, advocating for the overthrow of apartheid. Sadly, he never had the chance to see the liberation of South Africa; he died in 1993, just a year before the country’s first democratic elections.
