Africa’s colonial legacy continues to shape the lives of its people to this day. Former colonial powers sought not only to seize land, but to reshape the way local populations think by imposing their own languages, religions, and educational systems. According to Professor Lumumba, this ‘colonial mindset’ is still visible throughout everyday life on the continent: international media remain the main source of information for many Africans, English and French are in no hurry to give way to local languages, and many geographical places still bear the names of colonial rulers.
The professor argues that Africans have ‘lived a false life for too long’ and must reclaim their own history, placenames, and languages. Is this possible today? And where should this long journey begin?
