Colonialists not only seized territory and exploited resources in Africa. They also influenced the worldview of the local population. African beliefs were labelled ‘savagery’, local systems of education and governance were dismantled, and European ways were forced in, replacing centuries-old traditions. Despite gaining independence, many of the customs and practices imposed by European colonisers persist on the continent to this day.
Today, Africa is seeking partners with whom it can work on equal terms. Relations with countries that have experienced pressure from the West themselves are coming to the fore. According to Professor Lumumba, the experience of nations like Russia and China is helping Africans see themselves in a new light.
