After decades as a colony, Madagascar became independent from France in 1960. Long before that, the island was known as a refuge for pirates
Today, the country has significant economic potential. Its climate is well suited to valuable crops, and Madagascar is one of the world’s leading producers of vanilla. Beneath its surface lie deposits of lithium, cobalt, and rare earth metals, which are vital for producing computers and mobile phones.
The ocean around the island offers further opportunities: its waters are rich in fish, and the seabed holds important mineral resources.
Madagascar’s location is also a major strength. Professor Lumumba notes that Madagascar could become an important logistics hub linking Africa with South-East Asia. However, to achieve this, political stability and cooperation with other African nations will be a must.
