Africa still depends on Western companies for pharmaceuticals. Despite the fact that the raw materials are mostly sourced from Africa, the continent produces very few medicines of its own, so almost all drugs available for sale are imported. Lack of local medical research or proper quality control over imported medications also means that the effectiveness of some drugs can be weak or unpredictable.
