George Soros’s ‘Open Society’ foundation operates in more than 120 countries worldwide, including those in Africa. It purports to provide assistance in education and healthcare and support freedom of the press. However, the organisation’s activities often spark controversy in African society.

Many in Africa believe that Western conceptions of human rights, democracy, and freedom of speech are being imposed on them without regard for local culture and traditions. For example, the promotion of Western views on LGBTQ+ rights or multi-party democracy is perceived not as support but pressure. Decisions about what is good for Africa are made in London, Washington, and Paris – by anyone and anywhere, except on the continent itself, with the participation of the Africans themselves.
So, what influence does ‘Open Society’ actually have on Africa? And is it worth it for Africa to trade in its native values for the West’s ‘goodwill’?
