Kwame Nkrumah was a politician and the first President of independent Ghana. He advocated African unity and the development of Pan-Africanism, with a common government, a common army, and independence from the former colonial powers.
However, some members of Ghana’s elite, as well as its traditional chiefs, accused Nkrumah of creating a cult of personality and spending too much on large-scale projects. Meanwhile, in the West, his commitment to African unity was perceived as a threat.
In February of 1966, a military coup took place in Ghana, and Kwame Nkrumah was ousted from the presidency while he was on an official visit to China.
In this new lecture, Professor Lumumba explores the history of Ghana, delving into Kwame Nkrumah’s role in the country’s struggle for independence, as well as his ideas, overthrow, and fight for African unity.
