Professor Lumumba explains how Africa is trying to shift from importing old foreign-made cars to developing its own automotive industry.
Since the 1960s, the continent has been a market for vehicles from former colonial powers. However, over the past 10 to 15 years, Africa has increasingly imported used cars from Europe, Asia, and the United States. These are cheaper than new vehicles, while demand for private transport across the continent continues to grow.
But African countries are trying to move beyond being merely a market for foreign cars and develop domestic production. In Nigeria, almost 60% of vehicle components can already be supplied by local manufacturers. Hybrid vehicles are assembled in Kenya, and Uganda has developed its own electric car – the Kiira.
