Professor Lumumba explores how France’s colonial legacy continues to shape its relations with Africa — and why this long-standing model is now facing growing challenges.
The French language is one part of that legacy. France has also maintained its influence through trade, military ties and financial structures. The CFA franc, a currency system dating back to the colonial era, is still used in several countries in West and Central Africa and has long been the subject of debate and criticism across the continent.
According to Professor Lumumba, however, relations between France and African countries are undergoing significant change. This is particularly evident in the Sahel, including Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso. In recent years, these countries have sought to reduce French influence and assert greater autonomy in economic, political and security matters.
